ABOUT
PERSONALIZED TRAINING AND FUEL FOR THE FIRE
I am Annie Bothma, a two-time South African Marathon Champion, elite endurance athlete, sports nutritionist and running coach.
I won the South African Marathon Championship in 2023 and 2026 and represented South Africa at the World Cross Country Championships in Poland in 2013 and China in 2015. My career highlights also include winning the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, the Durban International Marathon and the Durban City Marathon. I ran a marathon personal best of 2:27:45 while claiming my second national marathon title in 2026.
I offer evidence-based nutrition support, personalized running coaching and strength training. I believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The right approach is one that considers each athlete’s individual training history, health, lifestyle and goals. This philosophy forms the foundation of the training programs and nutrition recommendations I create for my athletes.
My approach has been shaped by my own career and the world-class mentors from whom I have had the privilege of learning. These include Erick Kimayo, coach to former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei—I had the privilege of training alongside Brigid for several months in Kenya—as well as Olympian Zola Budd, Bennie Stander and Johan Fourie.
Academically, I achieved a distinction in my Master’s degree in Performance Sport Nutrition (IOPN, EQF Level 7). I have continued to develop my expertise through postgraduate education and certifications in sports nutrition, nutrition coaching, LEA and REDs, hormone health, blood biomarkers, injury rehabilitation and recovery nutrition. I am also a certified REDs Informed Provider and have multiple years of clinical experience working with and helping athletes who struggle with disordered eating and eating disorders.
I studied Exercise Science in the United States while competing on an NCAA Division I scholarship. During this time, I became a certified running coach, completed additional education in coaching children and worked as a YMCA youth track and field coach. I am also qualified as a Master Personal Trainer through the International Sports Sciences Association.
My ongoing professional development includes participation in the REDs Performance Mastermind and Alan Aragon’s Fit Advancement Mentorship, as well as a monthly subscription to the MASS Research Review.
My passion for sports nutrition grew through years of training and competing as an elite athlete. I learned first-hand that nutrition influences every aspect of performance: the quality of training, the ability to adapt, recovery, long-term health and consistency over time. This experience motivated me to study sports nutrition and continues to shape the standard of care I provide to every athlete.
My work combines current sports nutrition evidence with the practical experience I have gained from coaching athletes of all ability levels and competing at an elite level myself. I identify the priorities that will make the greatest difference for the athlete in front of me. This may involve fuelling key sessions more effectively, establishing consistent eating patterns, improving recovery or protecting long-term health.
My goal is to support sustainable high performance by helping athletes train consistently, compete at their best, protect their health, build long-term resilience and continue to enjoy their sport.
